Classified by material, there are two types of contact lenses available today; soft and rigid.
Soft Contact Lenses
Made from soft, flexible plastics known as hydrogels and silicone hydrogels, soft contact lenses contain water which allows more oxygen to pass through the lens to the eye. Suitable for occasional or long term wear, soft lenses are more comfortable than rigid contact lenses. They provide a practical vision correction solution for active wearers as well as everyday purposes.
Rigid Contact Lenses
Made from rigid, waterless plastics which allow oxygen to pass through the lens to the eye, rigid contact lenses are commonly referred to as RGP (rigid gas permeable) contact lenses. Usually less comfortable during the initial stages, RGP lenses are typically more durable than soft lenses.
These lenses are generally only prescribed to existing wearers, Ortho-K patients and for Keratoconus or post-graft patients.
Traditionally, contact lenses are removed and cleaned nightly ready for insertion the next day. However, contact lens wearers now have the option of daily contact lenses that can be thrown away or extended wear lenses that can be slept in for a recommended period.
Daily Disposable Contact Lenses
Daily disposable contact lenses are inserted in the morning, worn through out the day and simply thrown away at the end of the day. These are not approved for overnight wear.
Daily Wear Contact Lenses
Daily wear contact lenses are inserted in the morning, worn through out the day and removed at night for cleaning.
Extended Wear Contact Lenses
Providing the freedom and flexibility of not always having to remove your lenses, extended wear contact lenses can be slept in on occasion or, depending on the advice of your optometrist, can be worn continuously for up to 29 nights.
To reduce the risk of eye infections and prevent the build up of lens deposits and contamination, contact lenses should be replaced frequently according to the wearing schedule prescribed by your optometrist. Regular check ups will also be required to monitor your eye health.
Soft contact lenses area available in a range of wearing schedules:
Daily disposable contact lenses are to be replaced after a single day of wear.
Disposable fortnightly daily care contact lenses are to be cleaned daily and replaced every 14 days.
Disposable monthly daily care contact lenses are to be cleaned daily and replaced every 30 days.
Extended wear contact lenses are to be replaced ever 30 days.
Rigid contact lenses are typically replaced every one to two years.
