C Werner & Co is the oldest established Optometry practice in Victoria, having originally opened in the Fine Art Gallery in Ballarat in 1889. Our practice has remained an integral part of the local Toorak community from 1939 to the present day. Our gazelle logo, adapted from an Art Deco etched glass panel used in a 1933 renovation illustrates the individuality of the practice. We like to think that the attributes of the gazelle ' grace, beauty, elegance and speed ' are themes we embody throughout the practice both in our service and interior design. Optometrist Helen Robbins worked in the Low Vision clinics of Vision Australia for many years and has developed extensive expertise in helping people with vision impairment. She is now providing these services through her private practice, and is probably one of the few private practices with a special interest in Low Vision.
After working at the Victorian (now Australian) College of Optometry for around 20 years it was time to move on. Our good friends and colleagues on the Victorian Division Council were almost all in independent practice, so it was an obvious choice from the start.
We love working with the local people of Toorak who understand the importance of good health and eye care and the difference that good quality and stylish eye wear can make.
I became shortsighted around the age of 11 and realised in high school that I was much better at maths and science than at humanities. Like a lot of optometrists, I was having my eyes examined one day and had the flash of inspiration that this was something I could do. I really enjoy looking after my patients and know with certainty after 40 years of practice that I made the right decision. Outside my practice, I've tried almost everything creative over the years, but have really found my passion weaving. I completed a 2 year weaving course in 2006 and have been developing my skills ever since. I even sell my handwoven glasses cases in the practice!
We have been a member of the Rotary Club of Prahran since we took over the practice. Being a part of the club gives us the opportunity to become involved in many projects both locally and internationally. For the past few months I have also been running beginners sewing classes for refugees. It's great to see them developing new skills. Our practice also supports Optometry Giving Sight to provide eye care in developing countries.
