Additional Optometry Services

Many ProVision optometrists undergo additional training and education to provide special optometry services to the community.

As well as providing general optical services to their local communities, some of our optometrists choose to focus on one or more fields of treatment in particular, including Orthokeratology (vision correction while you sleep), Low Vision Optometry, Therapeutic Optometry, and Sports Vision.

Ortho-k Vision Correction While You Sleep

Orthokeratology (also known as Ortho-k) involves gently reshaping the cornea with custom-made contact lenses while you sleep to produce clear, lasting vision throughout the day. This eliminates the need to wear glasses or contact lenses during the day and is an excellent alternative to laser eye surgery.

Low Vision Optometry

People with Low Vision experience a visual impairment that is not correctable through traditional correction methods such as glasses and contact lenses, surgery or treatments. The term Low Vision encompasses both partial and severe vision impairment, and legal blindness.

Low Vision can result of an eye disease such as age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma or as a result of inoperable cataracts, trauma, stroke or genetic factors.

Low Vision Care assists people suffering from Low Vision to undertake everyday visual tasks and make the most of their remaining vision. This includes assessing the level of vision impairment, developing a plan to meet the patient’s visual goals and providing magnifying devices, vision aids or Low Vision aid training.

Therapeutic Optometry

Therapeutic Optometrists are approved to prescribe medicinal treatments in order to treat eye infections, major allergies, eye disease and glaucoma. In some cases, a therapeutic optometrist will work in conjunction with an Ophthalmologist to treat a patient, particularly in the case of glaucoma.

To obtain this endorsement, optometrists are required to complete mandatory training and apply for registration to prescribe therapeutics from their state board. Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme subsidies generally apply for ocular therapeutic products prescribed by therapeutic optometrists.

Sports Vision

Did you know that 80% of all information processed by the brain when playing sport is processed through the visual system? That’s why enhanced visual skills such as eye coordination, speed of focus and depth perception can help maximise sports performance and give you a competitive edge.

To ensure your eyes are as physically fit as your body, Sports Vision Optometrists will assess your eye mobility, depth perception, peripheral vision, eye coordination, speed of recognition and the ability to follow an object at speed with accuracy. These skills can be developed through a visual enhancement program based on your needs and sports-specific corrective lenses and eyewear may be prescribed.
