I grew up watching my father, Mac, practice optometry, and the eyes and visual system always interested me. I realised optometry would be a profession where I could help people, while continually learning and developing new skills. I constantly hear my patients say 'Of all my senses, my sight is the one I could not bear to lose'. Every time I hear this, it reaffirms for me that we, as optometrists, have the utmost responsibility to care for peoples' vision every day.
I had been interested in optometry from a young age as I was very short sighted and needed glasses since grade 3, and then contact lenses in high school which made a significant difference to my quality of life. I wanted to be able to help people with their sight, with a focus on children and those without access to health care and glasses. Enjoying the beach and relaxing in quaint coffee shops are my favourite pastimes.
I started to gain an interest in the field of optometry throughout school after requiring eye surgery for a 'turned eye' at the age of five. This sparked my interest to find out more about how the eye and visual systems work. I enjoy interacting with people and spending the time to get to know each and every patient. I come away each day with wonderful stories from our conversations. I graduated in 2002 so I have been a practising optometrist for nearly 17 years now. In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with my family, dancing and playing the piano.
Clacher and Hook Optometrist enjoys supporting Optometry Giving Sight through our annual bake sale and fundraising for World Sight Day. We accept donated glasses for collection by the Lions Club. We provide information sessions to schools, and conduct vision screenings at local primary schools.
